[...] Weston MA is getting a new Department of Public Works and it is going to be “green”. A committee formed and researched how to design buildings that will meet the requirements of being “green”, both in form and function. The process involved learning about LEED ((Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards and how to design a facility that would optimize these standards. Following LEED standards involves looking at the physical site which be built on, what type of energy will be used and how energy efficient the building will be, what materials will be used, how water efficient the facility will be and what the quality of the interior of the facility will be. The town of Weston is determined to make sure that their new facility will meet LEED standards although they will not be seeking LEED certification. The LEED certification process is quite costly and will not suit the budget for the project. The lack of certification, however. will not impede Weston’s mission of creating a “green” Department of Public Works. [...]
